The Little Poof! Big Bang!

Bruce J. Little is back! And this time the Little Poof! promises even more hilarity and moffie musical morphing mayhem in The Little Poof! Big Bang! This “versatile” performer at the “top” of his game, portrays different characters that will make you laugh from the “bottom” of your stomach.

See some familiar favourites like Mariska the reluctant fag hag and Thandawami the Love tokoloshe, as well as some all new characters like Quinton the queer wolf and Phil Macavity the roving (raving) reporter for Queer TV news, reporting to you live from the scene of the crime.

Little Poof! Has become an annual part of the whole Pink Loerie experience so come and laugh at and appreciate the vibrancy of our queer culture and our homo heritage.

You won’t want to miss it!

“Anybody? Enigiemand? Nie!”

The Minnie & Johnson show
South African darlings of the cabaret stage, Emile Minnie and Godfrey Johnson, will be joining forces and hands to bring you an evening of fun, humour and fabulous songs.
Fleur du Cap winner Godfrey Johnson and SAMA award nominee Emile Minnie will be performing raucous hits from the sixties to the naughties with just a piano, a clarinet and a wine glass. Come and see these two captivating artists light up the stage with their humour and energy. Songs include “Love is a stranger” by Eurythmics, “Holding out for a hero” by Bonnie Tyler and “YMCA” by the Village People.
For that something extra they will be doing French love songs by Piaf and Brel, as well as an original Afrikaanse treffer or two.
Grab your handbag, your man purse and your moonbag and make your way to the Minnie and Johnson show!

Highlight: The return of the hilarious ‘Little Poof! Big Bang!’, a play written by Bruce J. Little. And don’t miss the gorgeous boys strutting their stuff at the Mr Mardi Gras event on Friday 27 April.

Feel Good Factor: The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is raising funds to paint the Loeriehof Old Age Home. It is also raising funds and buying dog and cat food for the Knysna Animal Shelter.

Now in its 12th year, the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is one of the highlights on South Africa’s gay and lesbian events calendar and the only carnival of its kind in Africa.

There’s a multitude of entertainment scheduled that will keep the party alive throughout the festival. Regardless of what shade of pink you are, even if you’re just a little puce, there’s bound to be something to keep you stimulated – fine art, fine wine, fine dining, the finest musicians and DJs…and some very fine boys and girls too.

Among the many highlights of this Knysna gay festival is the Mardi Gras Street Parade, taking place on 30 April 2012 from mid-afternoon, followed by the Mardi Gras prize-giving immediately afterward.

The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras has its serious side too. It was started, in part, to create awareness about HIV/Aids as well as to foster an understanding about gay and lesbian issues.

In this the festival has been a fantastic success, nurturing tolerance and creating awareness both locally and throughout Southern Africa. In accordance with there goals, the Mardi Gras will offer free HIV testing and counselling during the festival.

The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is a colourful delight for the open-minded so grab your stilettos and get down to the mother of all parties.

What’s new: The Pink Loerie Village: ane area with lounges and booths where Pink Loerie attendees can simply hang out. Various liquor companies will be promoting their products here.

History: The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras started 12 years ago and is the first and only Mardi Gras festival on the African continent. It is also one of the biggest parties in the country.

Kamaliya Gaydar interview re Mr Gay World and more:

Russian pop superstar Kamaliya is set to unleash her dance floor filler ‘Rising Up’. We caught up with her to find out more about the insanely hot guy in her music video, her girl crush, touring with Steps, and being front and centre at this year’s Mr. Gay World!

Tell us a bit about your new track ‘Rising Up’ – what can we expect?
‘Rising Up’ is a very upbeat, sexy and fun song – definitely one of my favourites – so I’m very excited about it being released here in the UK. I love going to clubs and dancing, and I think that ‘Rising Up’ is the perfect club song to dance the night away to!

What are you most proud of about the track?
I think the arrangement that the mixers have built around a song I love is absolutely fantastic. Cahill and Soulseekerz have done an amazing job. The live performance for ‘Rising Up’ that we have put together will hopefully blow you guys away!

“I never give up and always work very, very hard. Nobody else is going to make your dreams come true but you!”

We love the video – who’s the hot guy in it?!
Thank you very much! The hot guy is James McDonald. Apart from the obvious fact that he is simply gorgeous, he was a real pleasure to work with and a real gentleman. He has a great sense of humour and we had so much fun making the video. He’s also very laid back so it was easy working together.

So, when did you first realise you could really sing?
I’ve been singing since the age of three! I was in children’s ensembles, taking opera lessons and, when I got older, I turned to popular music. Singing has always been an important part of my life and has helped me get through some difficult times.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
This might sound a bit cheesy, but it’s, ‘Don’t be afraid of hard work’. I actually listened to this piece of advice, so I never give up and always work very, very hard. Nobody else is going to make your dreams come true but you!

You’re also about to star in What About Love with Andy Garcia and Sharon Stone – tell us more!
I am so excited about working on this movie. It was supposed to be my Hollywood debut, but because of delays we will start shooting in May 2012, so instead my Hollywood debut was in Officer Down, starring James Woods and Stephen Dorff. It was an amazing experience and I enjoyed it immensely. I am so looking forward to shooting What About Love, I’m sure it will be very nerve wrecking and challenging, but I’m ready for it!

‘Rising Up’ is set to be big in the gay clubs – do you go out to gay clubs much yourself?
Of course, I absolutely love them and always have the best time!

“Live life large!”

You’re headlining Mr. Gay World in South Africa soon – what qualities would a man have to have if you were judging the competition?
A nice smile is a deal breaker for me. I’m also very outgoing, so I love people who are sociable and ready to have a good time. I like people who are active and live life to the fullest. I’m also involved in many charities, so I can relate to people who are concerned with issues like the environment and animal rights.

Who’s your girl crush?
Kylie Minogue! She’s amazing – the way she sings, acts, gigs and dresses. Her shows are absolutely phenomenal.

What’s your favourite piece of clothing?
I would have to say shoes. I am obsessed! I don’t even know how many pairs I have but I love them all and I think that they can bring any outfit to life. A good stiletto makes you feel like a million dollars!

You’re about to tour with Steps – can you give us any hints about what to expect from your performance?!
I am so excited about this upcoming tour! I can’t wait to get up on that stage. As far as the performance goes, well, you’ll just have to come and see it for yourselves! We’ve been working very hard on the whole thing – choreography, dancers, props – so hopefully it will be special.

Anything to add?
Live life large!

‘Rising Up’, the new single from Kamaliya, is released on 26 February 2012. Find out more at www.facebook.com/KamaliyaMusic.

NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE

Press Release 15.2011:

NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE FROM MR GAY SOUTH AFRICA™ 2011, LANCE WEYER

Johannesburg, South Africa – 30 December  2011 -

Mr Gay South Africa™ 2011, Lance Weyer: New Year’s Message:

2011 has been quite the year for the LGBTI community, both positive and negative. The old cliché rings true – two steps forward and one step back. We saw the adoption of a South African-led resolution to combat violence and discrimination against people on the basis of sexual orientation at the United Nations Human Rights Council in June, followed by a historic first UN report on the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. In the very same year we saw soaring levels of corrective rape of lesbian women and shocking reports of persecution of LGBTI people by the South African Police – the people that are supposed to be protecting them!

The international LGBTI community has also had its ups and downs, from the high of recognition of same-sex marriages in New York to the low of government endorsed homophobia in Uganda.

My hope for the South African LGBTI community in 2012 is bright. We have seen that where there is progress there is often also digression, however progress must always be celebrated. Since 1994 rights of and tolerance towards the South African LGBTI community have improved exponentially and we can look forward to this improving with time and continued community education. Government is simply not doing enough to educate all South Africans, especially in rural and township environments, on issues surrounding homophobia and transphobia. We need to put pressure on government to correct this, as well as establishing our own educational initiatives as continued ignorance towards the LGBTI community is our greatest issue. Particularly at this time of year, I believe it is always important to remember where we have come from and acknowledge the work done by those before us. The fight is not over, and we will continue to persevere in 2012

In April, we look forward to welcoming the Mr Gay World delegates from five continents to South Africa from the 4th to the 8th of April 2012. I want to ask the LGBTI community of South Africa to welcome our visitors with open arms and show them the hospitality for which we are renowned, by supporting the events lined up. There will be a sports challenge, fashion show, formal dinner and more over five days, culminating in the Grand Finale on Sunday 8 April at the now well-known Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City. Several of these events will be open to the public – keep an eye on the website www.mrgayworld.org for announcements about events and tickets for the final are available at Computicket.

I wish you all a prosperous new year, but please do something positive to make 2012 memorable: march in your first pride or Pink Loerie, plant a tree, clean up your neighbourhood, adopt a stray pet, or vow to fall in love … whatever you choose to do, do something that will make your 2012 memorable for all the right reasons.

Happy New Year!

- Lance Weyer
